Smiths guitarist to become music professor
LONDON (AFP) - The former guitarist in eighties rock band the Smiths, Johnny Marr, is to become a visiting music professor at a British university, he said Friday.
Marr, who co-wrote hits like "How Soon is Now?" and "Panic" with Smiths singer Morrissey, will deliver workshops and masterclasses to students on the popular music and recording course at Salford University in Manchester, north-west England.
"It is an honour to be appointed as a professor and I'm excited at the prospect of being able to make a contribution," Marr, 44, told reporters.
A spokesman for the university added: "He has so much to give and he is such a willing and enthusiastic guy -- those students lucky enough to benefit from Johnny's appointment are in for something really special."
Marr joined United States alternative band Modest Mouse, whose most recent album was a chart-topper in the United States last year.
