Fans of the 1970s are to be propelled into a galaxy far, far away at an open air concert in North Norfolk later this month. The force will be with the thousands of people it is hoped will attend the Party Under the Stars at Compton Hall, in South Creake on August 18. Darth Vader, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda are among some of characters from the cult cinema classic Star Wars that could entertain concert goers before they are treated to iconic 1970s music from Eric Faulkner's Bay City Rollers, Roy Wood Rock'n'Roll Band and Showaddywaddy. Members of the Norwich and District Star Wars Club will be dressing up as the George Lucas characters in a bid to help people to step back through the decades. Anna Gardner, from Compton Hall, said: ?Star Wars was so big in the 1970s that it is great we can include it in our concert. ?We have some really great bands playing who will be playing in some beautiful surroundings where people will really be able to turn back time to the 1970s for the evening, and to end the show there will be a fantastic fireworks finale.? Showaddywaddy have had more than 20 top 40 hits including Hey Rock and Roll and Under the Moon of Love, while Roy Wood, who was in Wizzard, The Move and the Electric Light Orchestra, has had hits with songs including See My Baby Jive, Angel Fingers and the festive classic I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day. For Eric Faulkner, who wrote many of the Bay City Rollers' world hits, his top tunes include I Only Wanna Be With You and Bye Bye Baby. Gates open at 4pm when people can enjoys picnics and the meet and greet with Star Wars characters. The concert starts at 6.30pm. Tickets cost £22 for adults and £17 for concessions. my blood is boiling about this , but I suppose the law knows best.take care of yourselfs hugs Valx No charges over Rollers rape claim (Tuesday August 21, 2007 04:46 PM) The former manager of 70s heart-throbs the Bay City Rollers will not face charges over claims he tried to rape a band member, police have said. Tam Paton has been cleared of the attempted rape of guitarist Pat McGlynn at an Australian hotel 30 years ago, at the height of the pop band's fame. The claim was made against 69-year-old Paton, who lives in Edinburgh, in 2003. Following an investigation Lothian and Borders Police said there was insufficient evidence to take the allegation any further. Formed at the end of the 1960s, the Bay City Rollers enjoyed huge success both in the UK and abroad. Famous for their distinctive tartan outfits and upbeat pop tunes like Bye Bye Baby and Shang-a-Lang, the group had a large teen following. Pat McGlynn, backed by singer Les McKeown, said the attempted rape took place on tour in 1977. Paton, who was jailed in 1982 for indecency with two teenage boys, said he was relieved at the outcome. The millionaire property dealer told the Edinburgh Evening News: "I am relieved but I knew I had done nothing wrong. There is no way I tried to rape him." He went on to blame the accusation on the fact that McKeown had a book coming out. _________________________________________________________________________ thank you for this news Helen hugs Valx

Dancing in rain at Creake stars party
THEY were singing and dancing in the rain rather than partying under the stars - but the weather failed to spoil the '70s music night at a Norfolk maize maze.
Three musical giants from the decade - Roy Wood, Showaddywaddy and Eric Faulkner's Bay City Rollers - entertained about 3,000 people at Compton Hall, South Creake, on Saturday night.
The event had been billed as a Party Under The Stars but thick cloud hung over the venue and rain fell during the evening on concertgoers, some of whom got into the spirit by donning 70s costumes.
Despite the weather and Star Wars characters pulling out of taking part, event organiser Anna Gardner said she was absolutely delighted with the success of the evening.
It was a brilliant night and everybody loved it and they made such an effort to come and tell us how much they enjoyed it. Roy Wood was absolutely electric and he has still really got it.
Showaddywaddy have a contender for a new re-mix of Aint No Cure For The Summertime Blues and Singin' in the Rain which they slipped into their set.
The raffle - which had the prizes of two guitars signed by all the performers - raised more than £1,000 for the Spinal Injury Association.

Roller Les' brother in hospital (from the scotsman paper) ANDREW PICKEN FORMER Bay City Rollers singer Les McKeown told today how the brother who helped him survive a "hellish year" was now ill in hospital. The former 1970s pin-up believes older brother Hari, who lives in Stenhouse, is the reason he is getting his life back together after being wrongly accused of drug dealing. But Les has now found himself sitting at his brother's bedside after he was admitted to hospital a week ago with kidney problems. Edinburgh-born Les - who will headline a charity concert at the Usher Hall a week on Thursday - said his brother had been a great source of strength during his court battle. The former Rollers frontman, whose band enjoyed nine UK top ten hits, said he took his brother's advice and got counselling after confiding that he was still struggling to cope with the death of both his parents in 2003. He said: "Anyone who has been in my position will know that although I knew I was innocent, you can never be 100 per cent sure that it will go the way it should. It was great that I had so much support all through this. "Hari has been counselling me over the past year and has been great in terms of telling me what kind of help I needed to get. "He suggested I attended bereavement counselling and that was a great help. "I feel like my life has been on hold for what has been a pretty hellish year so it has been great to get help with my problems, get back touring and start focusing on the positives in my life. I have been very lucky because I have had a lot of support, not just from my family but the fans as well. "After everything that has happened I am trying to concentrate on the good things in life and this charity concert is definitely one of them." Les also revealed that he was considering becoming a counsellor himself once he battles through his own problems with alcohol. Les, fellow former Roller Pat McGlynn and financial systems analyst Alistair Murray, 36, of Somerset Place, were all acquitted of conspiring to supply cocaine in February after a two-week trial at Basildon Crown Court. Detectives and Customs officers found more than £16,000 in bundles of notes in a washbag in McGlynn and Murray's black Clio. All three men, who denied the charges, said the meeting, in a hotel car park in Waltham Abbey, Essex, in May 2005 had been set up to arrange to buy a car. The 50-year-old star also revealed he is considering moving back to the Capital. He continued: "When I was coming back up on the plane and looking out of the window, I got a definite lump in my throat looking over Edinburgh to the Pentland Hills. I am quite into my horse-riding so I doubt I would get anywhere in the city but maybe just a wee steading somewhere would be nice." Les revealed that he had not spoken to ex-band guitarist Pat McGlynn since the court case but denied there was any rift between the pair. He said: "My relationship with Pat is like it always was before, quite casual, but there is no problem there. I wouldn't rule out us recording together at some point in the future." Les will next week star in the Blast From the Past show at the Usher Hall. Topping the bill is Les Mc-Keown's Legendary Bay City Rollers but also on stage will be fellow Seventies pin-up Alvin Stardust, The Glitter Band - former backing band of disgraced singer Gary Glitter - and a tribute outfit devoted to T-Rex. The April 20 benefit night is being staged by Kids Charities UK, which raises money for good causes including ChildLine, CHAS, Barnardos and the Scottish Cot Death Trust.

Who thought Kate Ceberano could dance so well? How does Samantha Fox still look so good? Is that Eminem’s grandad jumping around in the hip-hop clobber? And what in the name of Molly is Ignatius Jones doing to that saxophone?
Those questions and many more were asked on Wednesday night as the fully matured cheese platter rolled into the Burswood Dome for the second Countdown Spectacular — a celebration of the music beamed into our homes each week via the ABC-TV series from 1974 to 1987. Some questions were even answered, such as: Is Graham Bonnet alive? Whatever happened to Plastic Bertrand? And, am I sick and tired of Gavin Wood making poofter jokes about host Molly Meldrum? While billed as spectacular, the nostalgia train almost derailed every time Meldrum, Wood and “Molly minder” John Paul Young engaged in staged banter. Alcohol obviously was not the cause of Molly’s onscreen melodramas because the newly sober rock guru remained hopeless on Wednesday night. His crowd interaction extended to two questions: “Where are you from?” and “Who do you support?” The unholy trinity’s piss-farting about must have taken many back to their lounge rooms in the 70s, when they’d shout: “Shut up and play some bloody music!” And there were plenty of Countdown-era hits, so let’s put aside the Three Stooges, as well as the padding by the Countdown dancers and backing singers, the Wolfgramm sisters, who sang Madonna’s 1990 hit Vogue. What’s that got to do with Countdown? The fun kicked off with two remarkably well preserved one-hit wonders in Katrina Leskanich, who belted out Walking On Sunshine, and Belgium’s pin-up punk Plastic Bertrand, who deliriously pogo-ed to Ca Plane Pour Moi. There were audible gasps as Graham Bonnet emerged to shout It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue from the same stage the song’s writer, Bob Dylan, did so less than two weeks ago. People seemed genuinely shocked that the British singer was still alive and kicking. Pity he didn’t do his Bee Gees song, Warm Ride, a No. 1 in Australia. The hard rock of Sydney’s Radiators gave way to the hard curves of former Page Three princess Samantha Fox, who dropped a dance pop sex-bomb on us with Do Ya Do Ya and Australia’s highest-selling single of 1986, Touch Me (I Want Your Body). The 41-year-old has all but confirmed she is a lesbian, so her sublime cavorting with two female dancers took on another dimension. From the sublime to the ridiculous: Ignatius Jones, the former singer for shock-rockers Jimmy and the Boys, whose sleazy antics made the front page of the Daily News here in the late 70s, ripped off his pink tuxedo jacket to reveal leather bondage gear as he worked the stage (and the saxophonist) to The Kinks’ I’m Not Like Everybody Else. After that display, the mostly middle-aged crowd of nearly 5000 were relieved to be able to sing along to the dreary pop of Pilot, as Scotsman David Paton sang their chart-topping earworms Magic and January. Now dripping like cheese fondue, the Spectacular welcomed Racey’s Richard Gower for Lay Your Love on Me and Some Girls Do — with Gower changing the latter song to “some girls need a lot of shagging”. Oh, behave! Kiwi-born Sharon O’Neill’s 1983 single, Maxine, came and went before Wood introduced new-wave one-hit wonder Robin Scott as Robert Scott. Didn’t matter, we knew him as M and loved his 1979 punk pop number Pop Muzik. Although, with Scott dressed like your dad going to a hip-hop fancy dress party, it was more Pop’s Music. If the 80s gave us nothing else, it gave us the keytar, the synthesiser worn around the neck and held like a guitar. Wa Wa Nee’s Paul Gray, who doubled as musical director of Countdown’s versatile house band, strapped on the keytar for their 1986 pop hit, Sugar Free. No one above the age of 14 liked Wa Wa Nee back then and even now the fans were more in tune with the hard rock of The Angels. Well, original throat-shredder Doc Neeson and a bunch of mates WHO WERE VERY, VERY LOUD! After pumping versions of Take a Long Line and No Secrets, Neeson — to whom the years and a 1999 car crash have not been kind — crawled into the audience, who sang the profane retort to Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again? We were at the halfway mark and, after the interval, John Schumann walked out to perform Redgum’s 1983 classic, I Was Only 19 (A Walk in the Light Green). This was out of place among the pop and rock fodder, as was the haunting proto-electronica of The Reels’ Quasimodo’s Dream, sung by a foppish Dave Mason. The Knack’s My Sharona — now that’s more like it. Doug Fieger really rocked out and the house band’s axe man nailed that glorious guitar solo. And there was more rock, of the glam variety, from Perth’s own Supernaut, who eschewed the knee-high boots and shoulder pads of their heyday for slick suits to impress with 1976 hit, I Like It Both Ways. Never understood the Bay City Rollers’ appeal but the tartan was hoisted by plenty of female fans for Les McKeown and the turgid I Only Want to be With You and Bye Bye Baby. Bye-bye, Les and hello, Kate, as the fabulous Ms Ceberano stepped back into her teenage shoes for I’m Talking’s funky Trust Me and their cover of Rose Royce’s Love Don’t Live Here Anymore. The event continued to almost stumble into credibility with veteran singer-songwriter Richard Clapton delivering Girls on the Avenue, Deep Water and I Am an Island. Thankfully, JPY was on hand for Love is in the Air and Where the Action Is. We were into the home stretch as The Motels’ Martha Davis wrapped her soulful voice around three torch songs: Total Control, Only the Lonely and Take the L out of Lover. Superb stuff. Less engaging were Beeb Birtles, Glenn Shorrock and Graeham Goble — or I Can’t Believe it’s Not LRB — who played a medley of sawn-off hits in the slot filled by the reunited Sherbert last year. The Spectacular ended with a whimper rather than a bang, as Australian-born pop star, TV actor and wannabe guitar god Rick Springfield played songs that weren’t Jessie’s Girl. Then he played that 1981 No. 1, getting punters to sing the chorus as he really took the song TO THE MAX, MAN! An all-in finale of The Who’s My Generation ended the music marathon, which stretched well over three hours, and it was left to fans to compare the sequel to the first all-Australian instalment. Measured against the homegrown acts, some of the international guests left much to be desired. I guess if you’ve got time to come all the way to Australia for one or two songs across seven shows then your career isn’t exactly going gangbusters. Still, Countdown Spectacular 2 wasn’t about musicianship or re-establishing careers; it was pure nostalgia and pure fun. The only question left after the event was, who will they dig up for the Countdown Spectacular 3? Countdown Spectacular 2 Burswood Dome Wednesday, September 5 Review: Simon Collins
