Sinead O'Connor relieved she is bipolar
Sinead O'Connor has revealed that she felt relieved when doctors diagnosed her with bipolar disorder, because it helped to explain why she had felt so depressed for years.
The singer, who tried to commit suicide on her birthday seven years ago, admitted that she has had suicidal thoughts for years.
In 2003 she was diagnosed as bipolar and now has to take medication to help her control her moods and aid sleeping.
O'Connor revealed to chat show host Oprah Winfrey that the diagnosis has helped her to come to terms with the way she feels, saying: "I'm not going to sit here and claim that I'm kinda perfect or anything. Anything is an improvement when you've been in desolation... To be out of that place is brilliant. It doesn't mean you don't have lumps and bumps.
"(But) I'm certainly out of despair, which is great."
