Mickey Mac’ sets tone tonight for a nostalgic return to the 80s
Bowie, Police, Blondie, Duran, head the bill.
SHOULDER pads, side pony tails, leg warmers, big hair . . . there are some things better off left behind in the 80’s.
But when it comes to the music of the era, 80’s hits spark a nostalgic note, never failing to get everyone up on the dance floor.
Now it’s possible to recapture the spirit of the decade with the 80’s revival night in the Garryowen FC, Dooradoyle.
Whether or not you were old enough to catch it the first time around, the chart toppers of the eighties have a timeless appeal that’s sure to keep feet tapping.
Slade, Duran Duran, The Police, Blondie, The Cure, Cyndi Lauper, The Eurythmics, David Bowie . . . all the biggest hits of the 80’s will take you on an exciting trip down memory lane.
The revival night is the brainchild of Fiona Doyle, Lee Harrington and Peter Brazil.
Speaking at the official launch at the George Boutique Hotel, Lee expressed his delight with the link up with the famous rugby stronghold.
Gerard Clarke, Garryowen FC, said he has been busy of late putting the finishing touches to what he hopes will be one of the highlights of the local social scene.
Said Lee Harrington, "The incomparable Michael McNamara will be there in person on the opening night and who better than ‘Mickey Mac’ to set the tone for what promises to be a feast of music legends from this oft underplayed decade.”
"Many of the slightly older generation will remember the queues at the weekly dances in years gone by, and a return to those halcyon days is very much on the cards”.
The launch was attended by many of Limerick’s movers and shakers, including some from the Glamour Agency, many of whom expressed much anticipation for the revival nights. The current crop of Garryowen stars also attended the launch, club captain, Paul Neville, Willie Staunton, Anthony Kavanagh, Rory Brosnan, Conan Doyle and Edmund Mackey.
The 80’s nights will commence on Friday October 5, from 8 ‘till late, and will run each Friday night throughout the rugby season.
Fiona Doyle said: "It should be a fun spot and you’ll hear all your old personal 80’s favourites. Those of a more expressive disposition might want to throw on the leg warmers and headbands and go fancy dress for a real fun retro experience!”
