Yoko Ono unveils Lennon peace tower Wednesday, October 10 2007 Yoko Ono has unveiled a tower of light in Iceland to celebrate what would have been John Lennon's 67th birthday.
The singer's widow was joined by son Sean Lennon, ex-Beatle Ringo Starr and the late George Harrison's wife Olivia as she lit the Imagine Peace Tower on Videy island, near Reykjavik.
The tower is a ray of light beamed from a 65ft wishing well, which is engraved with the words "imagine peace" in 24 languages. It will be illuminated every year on Lennon's birthday until the anniversary of his death on December 8.
Wishes written by 100,000 people around the world will also be placed in capsules and buried in the area.
A choir sang Lennon's 1975 song 'Imagine' as Ono lit the tower, which she designed 40 years ago.
The 74-year-old explained: "I got the idea because I just liked the romantic idea of having a building that just appears, emerges once in a while but sometimes it is not seen."
She added: "I consider myself very fortunate to see the dream my husband and I dreamt together become reality."
